Albuquerque’s racing family. Four Indianapolis 500 wins. A hometown habit of going fast.
Al Unser Sr. was an Albuquerque driver from a family that already knew engines. He won the Indianapolis 500 four times. Said out loud on a Westside porch, it still sounds like too many.
He learned on local tracks and dry riverbeds. Speed, in this telling, is something the city exported. The trophies were his. The pride is the neighborhood’s.
We stay with the racing. This is a tribute, not a family statement, and not a claim on any Unser name or mark.
Independent tribute to an Albuquerque hero. Not affiliated with the person, the family, or any team or foundation that carries the name. We don’t use their photograph. See a mistake? Write dukecitylegends@gmail.com.
