1930 – 1985 · Balloonist. Double Eagle II. The box that still works.

Ben Abruzzo

Albuquerque balloonist. Double Eagle II, 1978. He helped this city learn to look up.

Ben Abruzzo was an Albuquerque businessman who treated ballooning as a craft. In 1978 he flew Double Eagle II with Maxie Anderson and Larry Newman, the first balloon to cross the Atlantic.

The Anderson-Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum carries the name beside Maxie’s. The museum is theirs. We only point at it.

We write him as a hometown hero of the sky. This page is not authorized by the family, and the picture is balloons, not his face.

Independent tribute to an Albuquerque hero. Not affiliated with the person, the family, or any team or foundation that carries the name. We don’t use their photograph. See a mistake? Write dukecitylegends@gmail.com.
