The World War II reporter who kept a small house in Albuquerque and wrote about ordinary soldiers.
Ernie Pyle wrote about ordinary soldiers with a clarity families trusted. Between assignments he came back to a modest house on a quiet Albuquerque street.
He was killed on Ie Shima in 1945, while covering the war. The house later became a library branch. It is still a neighborhood room, not a trophy.
He noticed people, and he came home to the high desert when he could. That is the legend we keep. The picture is a street, not a portrait.
