The Flash on the Wall

Tattoos in Burque ain’t a trend. Same Old English, same patience, as a plaque on a trunk.

A New Mexico tattoo shop at night with Old English flash sheets and a chrome machine

The shop is a room we actually use. Flash on the wall: Old English, lowriders, saints, lettering that looks cut, not typed. Machines on a black station. Gold and red catching the light. People come in after the cruise, jewelry still on, and sit for work that’ll outlast the paint job.

Chicano tattooing and New Mexico tattooing been talking for decades — L.A. plaque work, Española script, Burque shops that still draw by hand. This magazine’s lettering comes off that wall. We cover the shop like a bench: hours, a name, a piece you wear next Sunday. Come look. Come sit.

If the lettering looks like a font, you sat in the wrong chair.
